California Highway News: 5/15/13 – 5/26/13

Here is the news about California Highways for the latter half of May. Yes, this is being published before the end of the month — that’s because I’m in the process of doing highway page updates this weekend….

• Caltrans starting $4.9 million road project in San Bernardino Mountains. The project includes road work on Highways 138, 173 and 189 and is expected to continue until August.
• Mr. Roadshow: Work and History of Various Roads in California. Route 1, Route 108, Route 99, and I-40/Route 58.
• Toll road between Highway 101 and Monterey Peninsula? Highway 156 stretch a candidate. It’s just a 4-mile stretch of country road, but Highway 156 is a vital link between the Monterey Peninsula and the Bay Area — and now it could become the first toll road north of Los Angeles. In a report released Thursday, the Transportation Agency for Monterey County says converting the outdated two-lane Highway 156 into a nearby four-lane toll road between Highways 1 and 101 could be mostly paid for by modest tolls, ranging from $1.60 to $2.50 a trip.
• More congestion relief coming to Santa Ana Freeway. Metro and Caltrans broke ground today on the I-5 Carpool Lane Widening/Imperial Highway and Pioneer Boulevard Project, the fourth of six segments to begin construction. Metro is a major funding contributor to the I-5 South Corridor Widening Project, providing $965 million to date.
• CityDig: A Freeway Atlas From Before You Could Say You Took The 5 to the 2 to the 134. By the time this guide map was published in the beginning of the 1960s, Los Angeles had become a full-fledged freeway city and the automotive age for Southern California was in its middle-years.
