Going, Going, Gone

This post brings together a collection of news chum articles from the past weeks about things that have died, are dying, or will be dying — and no, I’m not talking about the American way of life. That was and will be covered in a separate post.

• Dead: Repertory East Playhouse. Well, at least as we knew it. REP went dark in January 2016 with no explanation (although I learned a little of the story), and there was just a bit of programming over 2016. The Santa Clarita Signal is reporting that the City has leased the theatre for 3 years in order to preserve it as an art venue. That makes it less likely that the REP of old will return, especially given current Equity rules.
• Dead (but Archived): Obama’s Whitehouse.Gov. When President Trump was inaugurated, the previous content of Whitehouse.gov disappeared. Many viewed this as a harbinger of bad things, but it was really just a government transition at work. Even so, we’ve been dismayed a week later to see what the new administration has done. That’s a separate post.
• Dying: The Circus. Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey is closing down. So where can I run away to now?
• Sears Santa Monica. The 1947 Sears in Santa Monica is closing, to be replaced by a mixed use development. This is predictable given the trajectory of Sears and the age of the building, but it is sad none-the-less.
• Dead: Wax Presidents. The Hall of the Presidents and First Ladies in Gettysberg is closing, and they are disposing of the Presidents. So where does a slightly used wax President go?
• Dying: Santa Monica Airport. It has finally happened. The FAA permitted Santa Monica to close its airport. In 2028. To be replaced by a park.
• Dying: The Thrift in Thrift Shop. An interesting piece from Bargain Babe, asking the question whether thrift shops are becoming a rip-off / overpriced? Have the hipsters ruined it again?
