Basically, it boils down to the effort put in is the result you get out. Writing a personal letter, on paper, takes time. Making a phone call takes time. That personal effort in this era of electronic communication shows the issue is of real concern. Adding your name to an online petition doesn't take time. Cutting and pasting an email doesn't take time. Those actions may indicate a broad sentiment, but don't result in much action.
Further, there is the notion out there that if you get enough signatures on a petition, they have to listen to you. No, they don't. This country is not run be petition, which was my first point. Some states permit initiatives by petition, but at the Federal level, they have no meaning. Overwealming a district office with paper -- that gets attention. Pointing out that their reelection might be in jeopardy -- that gets attention.
