Things You Don’t Think About

This lunch-time news chum post (prepared Weds. night and brought to work in a brown-paper sack) brings together a number of things that you probably don’t think about…

• Praying at the Airport. We probably think that pastoral people and clergy live in houses of worship. But that’s not the only place. They are on military bases, prisons, hospitals… and airports. Here’s an interesting article on airport chaplains, what they do, and why they love their job.
• Where Do Used Clothes Go? We’ve all donated clothes. We’ve all likely gotten some clothes at thrift shops. Have you ever wondered what happens to clothing that doesn’t sell at thrift shops? This article answers that question. In short, they go to even poorer countries, where they are sold for pennies and reworked into other stuff.
• The Lady with the Lamp. We’ve all seen the postage stamp with the face of the Statue of Liberty on it. Right? Guess what? That’s not the statue in New York. Really, it is the statue in Las Vegas, and the artist wants royalties.
• In The Cloud. Everyone is talking about moving their data to the cloud. But that has implications not often thought about. For example: consider the problem of lawyers storing client’s data in the cloud.
• I Can’t Stomach That. The platypus is an interesting beast. Among its many special features: it has no stomach. Neither do quite a few fishes. Every wonder why. Here’s the answer. You’ll never look at your stomach the same.
