California Highway Headlines: 9/17/13 – 10/1/13

Ah, September. The time when the winds turn dry and strong, and smog, if not smoke, is in the air. Well, that’s often fall in Southern California, at least. But at least the new Bay Bridge is open, work on the 405 and the 5 is progressing, and hopefully for you, life is good. Let’s make it better with some headlines:

• Golden Gate Bridge barrier expected next year. Those harrowing drives across the Golden Gate Bridge with oncoming traffic inches away, separated only by a row of yellow plastic tubes, will in all likelihood come to an end next year with the arrival of a slender steel-and-concrete movable median barrier. After 15 years of planning and searching for funding, the bridge district’s Board of Directors is expected to approve the purchase of the $26.5 million barrier – designed to prevent head-on collisions…
• Bracero Memorial Highway dedicated to celebrate contributions of Mexican field workers and railroad builders. Signs dedicating a stretch of 101 as the Bracero Memorial Highway — a memorial to the 32 field workers killed that day — were unveiled at a ceremony Saturday at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. • County adopts $39.6 million Greenbrae interchange plan, gives $11.4 million to SMART. Facing a Monday deadline to come up with a plan for traffic improvements along Highway 101 in Larkspur and Corte Madera, elected officials met Thursday night and into Friday morning to ink a final $39.6 million proposal.
• Highway 67 barriers considered. State Route 67 between Lakeside and Ramona has been the scene of numerous, horrific head-on collision over the years. Now the state’s transportation department is studying whether to build median barriers along a 12-mile stretch of the highway between Willow Road in Lakeside and Shady Oaks Drive in Ramona — an idea talked about for decades but always rejected for various reasons.
