Changes to the California Highway Pages covering August – October 2025

Posted by cahwyguy

Another three months, another highway page update cycle completed, finishing just after the October 2025 CTC meeting. This cycle, whose changes are detailed on the October 2025 Change Page with proper formatting, or just pasted below, covers August through October 2025. Enjoy, and as always, “ready, set, discuss”.

Next up: Continuing work on the California Highways: Route by Route Season 4 episodes. I’ve written the episodes through 4.06, and recorded 4.01. So next is recording 4.02, writing 4.07, and doing the research for the rest of the season (on Route 12, Route 13, and Route 14).

Note that there’s lots of good stuff buried in the CTC notes, including:

  • ♠ (Oct) (3) Approval of Project for Future Consideration of Funding: 01-Men-1, PM 43.3/44.2. Albion River Bridge Project. Replace the Albion River Bridge on Route 1 in Mendocino County near Albion from 3.0 miles north of the Route 128 junction to 0.2 mile north of the Albion River. (FEIR) (PPNO 4490) (SHOPP)
(Related Items under Ref. 2.5b.(2) and 2.5b.(3))
  • ♠ (Oct) (4) Approval of Project for Future Consideration of Funding: 03-Sacramento County. I Street Bridge Replacement Project. New two-lane bridge to replace existing two-lane vehicle crossing.  (FEIR) (PPNO 1809)  (LPP) [Note: This is former Sign Route 24]
  • ♠ (Oct) (6) Approval of Project for Future Consideration of Funding: 07-LA-39, PM 40.0/44.4. California State Route 39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road) Reopening Project. Restore and reopen a segment of Route 39 as an evacuation route and for use by the Department, United States Forest Service, and emergency-response personnel. (FEIR) (PPNO 5381) (SHOPP)
    (Related Item under Ref. 2.5b.(2))
  • ♠ (Oct) (7) Approval of Project for Future Consideration of Funding: 10-Stanislaus County. 7th Street Bridge Project. Replace existing structurally deficient two-lane bridge with a four-lane bridge.  (FEIR) (PPNO 1809) (LPP) [Note: This is former US 99]

And, of course, all the financial allocations. It is worth reading through them.

On to the changelog:

This update covers the rest of August, September, and October 2025. Before we dive into the updates to the California Highways site, an update on the California Highways: Route by Route podcast. As always, you can keep up with the show at the podcast’s forever home at https://www.caroutebyroute.org , the show’s page on Spotify for Podcasters, or you can subscribe through your favorite podcaster or via the RSS feeds (CARxRSpotify for Podcasters) . The following episodes have been posted since the last update in early August:

  • August | CA RxR 3.14: Freeway Exit (Bonus). Bonus Episode 3.14 continues our inter-season gap between Seasons 3 and 4. This episode we’re sharing an episode of the excellent Freeway Exit podcast from KPBS San Diego. Freeway Exit, hosted by Andrew Bowen, is an exploration of San Diego’s freeways, their costs, and how they can be part of the solution. It covers the forgotten history of the urban freeway network, and how decades after that network was finished, some communities are still working to heal the wounds that freeways left behind. The episode we’ve chosen to share focuses on the Cabrillo Freeway, Route 163, through Balboa Park, and explores the question: Is it time to remove the freeway? After the episode, we have a discussion with Andrew about the podcast, the the San Diego freeway system, and how highways fit into the bigger picture. Oh, and we discover what he is doing next with the podcast, and try to convince him to do one on the Route 710 gap. This episode is also a test of using Zencaster to record the podcast. Hopefully it sounds better, and next time I’ll move my microphone a bit further back. Zencaster also gives us the ability to have transcripts. Would folks want them included in the post? One more bonus episode is in the works: An interview with the LA Metro Archivist. We’ll pick up in the October with Season 4, which will cover Route 8 through Route 14.  PS: Support KPBS, or your local PBS/NPR Station (Spotify for Podcasters)
  • September | CA RxR 3.15: LA Metro Archives (Bonus). A New Year’s Gift for you: Our last Bonus Episode of Season 3. Episode 3.15 features an interview with Claire Kennedy, Archivist for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Agency (LA Metro). In this role, Claire manages the LA Metro Archives, which date back to the 1800s and the earliest horse-drawn transportation in the city. These archives cover not only the wide variety of transit agencies in Los Angeles, but also the highway and road system as Metro is the Regional Transportation Agency. These archives are a public resource, and are open by appointment; information on how to make an appointment is in the podcast (and below). Note that we had some trouble with Zencastr this episode; we fell back to FreeConferenceCall.com. We’ll pick up in the October with Season 4, which will cover Route 8 through Route 14. (Spotify for Podcasters)
  • October | CA RxR 4.01: I-8, Former Route 109, Route 209, and US 80 in San Diego. Welcome to Season 4 of CA Highways: Route by Route. Episode 4.01 is the first half of our exploration of Route 8. This episode covers the 8th State Highway, which became LRN 36 and later Route 194. It covers LRN 8, which ran from Ignacio (Novato) to Cordelia via Napa, and became parts of Route 37, Route 121, Route 12, and Route 29. We look at Sign Route 8, which became today’s Route 26. And lastly, we look at I-8 in San Diego, including its historical ancestor US 80. This includes former Route 209 to Point Loma, which was part of LRN 12 and possibly US 80, and former Route 109, which became the portion of Route 8 W of I-5 (and you’ll learn why that is not I-8). Episode 4.02 will pick up the story and explore the rest of I-8/US 80 between San Diego and the Arizona Border, including a discussion of the Imperial Highway. (Spotify for Podcasters)

Turning to the updates to the California Highways pages: Updates were made to the following highways, based on my reading of the (virtual) papers and my research for the fourth season of the podcast in June and July 2025 (which are posted to the roadgeeking category at the “Observations Along The Road” and to the California Highways Facebook group) as well as any backed up email changes. I also reviewed the the AAroads forum (Ꜳ). This resulted in changes on the following routes, with credit as indicated [my research(ℱ), contributions of information or leads (via direct mail or ꜲRoads) from Nathan Edgars (NE2)(2), Tom Fearer(3), Ann Maris(4), Adrian Ople/City of Brawley(5)Plutonic Panda(6)]: Route 1(ℱ,3), Route 2(ℱ), Route 3(2), Route 9(ℱ), Route 11(ℱ),  Route 17(ℱ), Sign Route 18(ℱ), Route 28(ℱ), Route 29(ℱ), Route 36(2), Route 38(ℱ), Route 47(ℱ), Route 49(ℱ,3), Route 57(ℱ), Route 59 (Atwater-Merced Expressway)(3), Route 60(ℱ), Route 61(ℱ), LRN 69(ℱ), Route 71(ℱ,6), I-80(ℱ), US 80(ℱ), Route 89(ℱ), Route 91(ℱ,6), US 97(ℱ), Route 99(ℱ), US 101(ℱ), LRN 105(ℱ), LRN 107(ℱ), Route 120(ℱ), Route 131(ℱ), Route 133(ℱ), Route 166(ℱ), Route 180(3), Route 185(ℱ),  LRN 226(ℱ), Route 227(3), LRN 228(ℱ), Route 238(ℱ,4), LRN 252(ℱ), Route 260(ℱ), I-580(ℱ), I-680(ℱ), I-710(ℱ), I-880(ℱ), Imperial County Sign Route S31(5).

Continued work on Season 4 of the Route by Route podcast. It is surprising how pulling the thread on one particular route’s page touches a large number of routes, and often results in a reorganization and deep review of information on the page that may have gotten stale in the light of subsequent research. This resulted in changes and updates to the following routes: Route 3, I-5, Route 9, I-10, Route 11, Route 17, Route 18, Route 26, Route 30, Route 36, Route 38, Route 74, Route 110, Route 118, Route 138, Route 172, Route 195, Route 206, Route 236, Route 248, Route 259, Route 262, US 40, US 48, US 60, US 70, US 66, US 91, US 99, US 395, LRN 5, LRN 9, LRN 26, LRN 31, LRN 35, LRN 42, LRN 43, LRN 44, LRN 59, LRN 154, LRN 161, LRN 171, LRN 172, LRN 173, LRN 186, LRN 190, LRN 191, LRN 205, LRN 240.

As the Maps page is rapidly turning to a “research starting point” page, added a link to the AASHTO Route Numbering Archive, which is a great starting point for researching the history of US and Interstate numbering. Adding this, in preparation for the bonus podcast episode on the LA Metro Archives, led to updating and correcting a number of links on the map pages that had gone stale, and adding in a few more links, especially some meta links like the Digital Library Directory.

Reviewed the Pending Legislation page, based on the California Legislature site, for bills through 2025-10-19. As usual, I recommend to every Californian that they visit the legislative website regularly and see what their legis-critters are doing. As many people are unfamiliar with how the legislature operates (and why there are so many “non-substantive changes” and “gut and amend” bills), I’ve added the legislative calendar (updated for 2025) to the end of the Pending Legislation page. Noted the passage of the following bills / resolutions:

  • AB 5 (Berman) Elections: official canvass.
Existing law requires elections officials to commence the canvass for an election no later than the Thursday following the election and to make the canvass open to the public. Existing law requires the canvass to be continued daily, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays excepted, for not less than six hours each day until completed. Existing law requires elections officials to prepare a certified statement of the results of the election within 30 days of the election and to send the Secretary of State a complete copy of all election results within 31 days of the election. Existing law requires the Secretary of State to prepare, certify, and file a statement of the vote no later than the 38th day after the election.
This bill would require elections officials, on or before the 13th day following an election, to finish counting all ballots, with certain exceptions, including provisional ballots and ballots for which the voter must either verify or provide a signature, and release a vote count for those ballots. If an elections official will not meet that deadline, they would be required to file a notice of extension, including the reason for the extension, with the Secretary of State. By increasing the duties of county elections officials, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the state. Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that reimbursement.

This bill would provide that, if the Commission on State Mandates determines that the bill contains costs mandated by the state, reimbursement for those costs shall be made pursuant to the statutory provisions noted above.

10/03/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State – Chapter 250, Statutes of 2025.

  • AB 697 (Wilson) Protected species: authorized take: State Route 37 project.
Existing law, the California Endangered Species Act, prohibits the taking of an endangered or threatened species, except in certain situations, including, if specified conditions are met, under a permit issued by the Department of Fish and Wildlife commonly known as an incidental take permit. Existing law also enumerates fully protected species and prohibits the take of fully protected species, except under limited circumstances.

This bill would permit the department to authorize, under the California Endangered Species Act, the incidental take of specified fully protected species resulting from impacts attributable to a specified project on State Route 3, if certain conditions are met, including, among others, the conditions required for the issuance of an incidental take permit.

[Note: The specified project is Sears Point to Mare Island Improvement Project on State Route 37 from east of Lakeville Highway near State Route 121 in the County of Sonoma to west of Sacramento Street in the County of Solano]

10/07/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State – Chapter 438, Statutes of 2025.

  • AB 1085 (Stefani) License plates: obstruction or alteration.
Existing law prohibits a person from erasing the reflective coating of, painting over the reflective coating of, or altering a license plate to avoid visual or electronic capture of the license plate or its characters by state or local law enforcement. Existing law prohibits a person from installing or affixing on a vehicle a casing, shield, frame, border, product, or other device that obstructs or impairs the reading or recognition of a license plate by an electronic device operated by state or local law enforcement, an electronic device operated in connection with a toll road, high-occupancy toll lane, toll bridge, or other toll facility, or a remote emission sensing device, as specified. Existing law also prohibits the sale of a product or device that obscures, or is intended to obscure, the reading or recognition of a license plate by visual means, or by an electronic device in violation of the above-described provisions. A conviction for a violation of this provision is punishable by a fine of two hundred fifty dollars $250 per item sold or per violation. A violation of the Vehicle Code is a crime.
This bill would further prohibit a person from installing or affixing a shade or tint that obstructs the reading or recognition of a license plate by an electronic device operated by state or local law enforcement, an electronic device operated in connection with a toll road, high-occupancy toll lane, toll bridge, or other toll facility, or a remote emission sensing device, as specified. The bill would further prohibit the manufacture of these products and devices in the state and impose a $1,000 fine per item sold or manufactured for a violation of these provisions. The bill would also make clarifying changes. By creating a new crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the state. Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that reimbursement.

This bill would provide that no reimbursement is required by this act for a specified reason.

[Good! One of the things that bothers me are all these folks with license plate wraps to change colors (white on black, blue on black, red on black, green on black, etc.) or with covers to evade toll readers. — DPF]

10/01/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State – Chapter 179, Statutes of 2025.

  • ACR 21 (Flora) Galt Police Officer Harminder Grewal Memorial Highway.
Designates the section of Route 99 between the Collier Road Overcrossing № 29-0137 (SJ 036.667) and Begin Bridge No Channel Dry Cr № 24-0030R (SJ 038.766) in the County of San Joaquin as the “Galt Police Officer Harminder Grewal Memorial Highway”.

09/10/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State – Res. Chapter 175, Statutes of 2025.

  • SB 22 (Laird) Gift certificates.
Existing law provides that a gift certificate, sold after January 1, 1997, is redeemable in cash or subject to replacement with a new gift certificate except that a gift certificate with a cash value of less than $10 is redeemable in cash for its cash value. For purposes of these provisions, existing law defines “gift certificate” to include gift cards.

This bill would, instead, make a gift certificate with a cash value of less than $15 redeemable in cash for its cash value, exempt from that redemption provision certain gift certificates that are donated to a nonprofit or a charitable organization, as provided, and make these provisions operative on April 1, 2026. The bill would expand the definition of “gift certificate” to include electronic gift cards. The bill would also make conforming changes.

10/01/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State. Chapter 207, Statutes of 2025.

  • SB 30 (Cortese) Transportation: diesel trains and rolling stock: resale restrictions.
Existing law provides various provisions applicable to all public transit and transit districts and includes specific requirements applicable to public entities that operate commuter rail or rail transit systems.

This bill would prohibit a public entity that owns diesel-powered on-track equipment from selling, donating, or otherwise transferring ownership of that equipment for continued use after the public entity decommissions the equipment. The bill would exempt the sale, donation, or transfer of the ownership of that equipment from the prohibition if the equipment is deemed to be in one of specified categories of emissions standards designated by the federal government for locomotives, the equipment produces emissions equivalent to any equipment within any of those federal categories, or the diesel engine is removed from the equipment, as specified.

10/13/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State. Chapter 735, Statutes of 2025.

  • SB 78 (Seyarto) Department of Transportation: report: state highway system: safety enhancements.
Existing law establishes the Department of Transportation and vests it with full possession and control of the state highway system.

This bill would require the department to prepare a report evaluating current efforts and potential opportunities to streamline the processes and procedures for the delivery of safety enhancement projects on the state highway system, as specified. The bill would require the department to submit the report to the Legislature on or before January 1, 2027.

10/13/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State. Chapter 743, Statutes of 2025.

  • SB 506 (Committee on Transportation) Transportation: omnibus bill.
    (1) Existing law establishes the Tri-Valley-San Joaquin Valley Regional Rail Authority for purposes of planning, developing, and delivering cost-effective and responsive transit connectivity between the Bay Area Rapid Transit District’s rapid transit system and the Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail service in the Tri-Valley that meets the goals and objectives of the community, as specified. Existing law requires the authority’s governing board to be composed of 15 representatives.

The bill would replace the Mountain House Community Services District with the City of Mountain House on the authority’s governing board.

    (2) Existing law, the Treasure Island Transportation Management Act, authorizes the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco to designate a board or agency to act as the transportation management agency for Treasure Island, defined to also include Yerba Buena Island. Existing law authorizes the board of supervisors and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, by a 2/3 majority vote of both bodies, to adopt a program of imposing congestion pricing fees for motor vehicles exiting and entering Treasure Island and an initial congestion pricing fee structure, as specified. Existing law requires that, once adopted, the congestion pricing program may only be terminated by the recommendation of both the Treasure Island Development Authority and the Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency followed by a 2/3 majority vote of both the board of supervisors and the transportation authority. Prior to imposing the initial congestion pricing fees, existing law requires the board of supervisors and transportation authority to each make a finding of fact by a 2/3 majority vote that the congestion pricing fees have a relationship or benefit to the motor vehicle drivers who are paying the fee.

This bill would delete references to the San Francisco County Transportation Authority from the provisions described above, thereby removing those duties from the transportation authority. The bill would also make conforming changes.

    (3) Existing law requires that each application for an original or a renewal of a driver’s license contain certain information, including the applicant’s true full name, age, mailing address, and gender. Existing law also provides that if a driver’s license is lost, destroyed, or mutilated, or if a new true full name is acquired, the person to whom the driver’s license was issued shall obtain a duplicate if the person provides satisfactory proof of the loss, destruction, or mutilation. A violation of these provisions is an infraction.

This bill would authorize a person who submits a change of address, as specified, to apply for a duplicate driver’s license. The bill would require the applicant who receives a duplicate through this process to immediately destroy the license containing the prior mailing address. By creating a new crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

    (4) Existing law generally prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver’s clear view through the windshield or side windows. Existing law provides exceptions to this prohibition, including, among other things, a video event recorder in a commercial motor vehicle with the capability of monitoring driver performance to improve driver safety, as specified.

This bill would revise the above-described exception to instead apply to vehicle safety technology, as defined, installed on specified vehicles, including, among others, motortrucks of 3 or more axles that are more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, that are otherwise in compliance with federal regulations, as specified.

    (5) Existing law requires the Department of the California Highway Patrol to adopt reasonable rules and regulations that, in the judgment of the department, are designed to promote the safe operation of vehicles, including hours-of-service regulations for drivers of those vehicles that are consistent with specified federal hours-of-service regulations applicable to motor carriers. Existing law establishes exceptions to these regulations for vehicles engaged in intrastate commerce that are not transporting hazardous substances or hazardous waste, including a driver of a truck or truck tractor, except for a driver of a tank vehicle with a capacity of more than 500 gallons transporting flammable liquid, as specified. Existing law authorizes the department to create an exception for a driver, by regulation, of a tank vehicle with a capacity of more than 500 gallons to exceed the maximum driving time, provided that those regulations are consistent with federal laws and regulations, during a state of emergency declared by the Governor and for the purpose of refueling aircraft used in emergency-related activities.

This bill would remove the requirement that this exception be consistent with federal laws and regulations and would remove the requirement that the exception be limited to the driver of a tank vehicle with a capacity of more than 500 gallons. The bill would also make certain technical, nonsubstantive changes.

The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the state. Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that reimbursement.

This bill would provide that no reimbursement is required by this act for a specified reason.

10/06/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State. Chapter 417, Statutes of 2025.

  • SB 800 (Reyes) State overpasses: suicide prevention.
Existing law requires the Department of Transportation to install screening on state freeway overpasses to prevent objects from being dropped or thrown upon vehicles passing underneath, as provided..

This bill would require, beginning on or before July 1, 2028, the Department of Transportation, in consultation with the State Department of Public Health and in collaboration with impacted local governments, to incorporate suicide deterrent considerations in the updates of applicable guidance documents, as provided.

10/06/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State. Chapter 427, Statutes of 2025.

09/03/25    Chaptered by Secretary of State. Res. Chapter 164, Statutes of 2025.

Reviewed the online agenda of the California Coastal Commission for the August, September, and October meetings. The following was of interest:

  • (October) October 2025 Permit Amendment No. 1-18-1078-A4 (Caltrans, Eureka-Arcata Highway 101 Corridor Project Amendment, Humboldt Co.). Construction of the Eureka-Arcata Route 101 Corridor Improvement Project on US 101 including: installation of median crossing closures; construction of new interchange at Indianola cutoff; extensions of highway acceleration & deceleration lanes; replacement of southbound Jacoby Creek Bridge; replacement of bridge rails on northbound Jacoby Creek and Gannon Slough Bridges; replacement of tide gates; and other roadway improvements.

I checked California Transportation Commission page for the results of the August and October 2025 meetings of the California Transportation Commission. As always, note that I tend not to track items that do not impact these pages — i.e., pavement rehabilitation or replacement, landscaping, drainage, culverts, roadside facilities, charging stations, or other things that do not impact the routing or history, unless they are really significant. As such, the following items were of interest:

[ Note: ° indicates items that were below the level of detail for updating the specific route pages; ♠ is an indicator used to keep track of what has been added to the pages; ❧ indicates the results from the meeting, if the meeting minutes were available. ]

2.1a. STIP/SHOPP Program/Project Amendments

♠ (Aug) (1) SHOPP Amendments for Approval:
(Related Items under Ref. 2.5b.(1), 2.5b.(2), 2.5d.(11) and 2.5d.(14))

  • Add 34 new projects into the 2024 SHOPP. (2.1a.(1a))
  • Develop 1 Long Lead project (2.1a.(1c))
  • Revise 27 projects currently programmed in the 2024 SHOPP.  (2.1a.(1d) 2.1a.(1f))

Of these, the following projects/allocation were at the level of interest for the highway pages (general, these are significant new structures or changes, as opposed to repair or rehabilitation in place; additions of bike paths, pedestrian, or complete street elements; or non-visible changes). “⊘” indicates phase not authorized.

  • (1a) #1. 02-Sha-273 5.2/14.5. PPNO 02-3930; ProjID 0224000158; EA 1K720. 2.5f Financial Allocations for SHOPP

♠ (Aug) Informational Reports on Allocations Under Delegated Authority:

  • Emergency G-11 Allocations (2.5f.(1)): $110,043,000 for 34 projects.
  • SHOPP Safety Sub-Allocations (2.5f.(3)): $35,219,000 for seven projects.
  • Minor G-19-05a Allocations (2.5f.(4)): $1,466,000 for two projects.

The following projects were of interest for the highway pages. Uninteresting projects included emergency storm damage mitigation that was primarily repairs; repairing damage from unhoused individuals; and damage from accidents, because all of these eventually restore the facility to the condition it was in before the emergency (and thus there is no new facility or significant change to the facility).

  • (1) #27.$1,585,000. 07-LA-10 17.0/17.7. PPNO 07-6144; ProjID 0724000148; EA 2XL00. I-10 In the city of Los Angeles, from Alameda Street to Santa Fe Avenue.  A fire broke out in the early hours of November 11, 2023 around 14th Street, at the westbound Route 10 offramp to Alameda Street, and engulfed flammable materials such as wood pallets underneath Route 10.  The fire quickly spread, and melted bridge railing and damaged concrete on bridge columns and the underside of the bridge structure.  This project will remove and clean hazardous materials and debris from the project site.  Abatement is being sought from the responsible party. The first supplemental was necessary to provide site security, convert an open channel to a box culvert to accommodate construction vehicles, and to continue removing hazardous waste from this location, which was more extensive than originally estimated. This second supplemental is necessary to repair the electrical and lighting systems damaged by the initial event that were not originally included in the scope. Additional construction support resources needed to address the additional working days to complete the project. Construction funds allocated: (1) Initial G-11 Allocation  12/05/2023: $3,500,000; (2) Supplemental G-11 Allocation  02/06/2024: $3,750,000; (3) Supplemental G-11 Allocation  06/17/2025: $1,585,000 ; (4) Revised Allocation: $8,835,000. On January 8, 2025, an earthquake occurred in the region. The geological activity has caused pavement deformations along a fault line that crosses the roadway. This fault may stay active for months after the earthquake.  By February 8, 2025, the continued geological activity resulted in elevation differential and surface cracking on the traveled way. This project will grind, pave, and maintain pulverized roadway surface to allow safe passage of motorists, repair failed slopes, permanently repair the pavement when the seismic activity subsides, and perform geotechnical investigations for a long- term strategy for this earthquake prone area.  Due to elevation differential, the roadway is being maintained for safe traffic flow.  The current rate of movement has increased up to 4 inches per day with a cumulative vertical displacement of approximately 30 feet, necessitating frequent excavation and near daily grading. To minimize the potential for road closures, this supplemental is necessary to construct a two-lane temporary detour to circumvent the unstable fault-slide zone while the solutions for a permanent strategy are being explored in this area of active seismic activity. Construction funds allocated: (1) Initial G-11 Allocation  03/03/2025: $6,300,000; ⇒ (2) Supplemental G-11 Allocation  09/04/2025: $7,425,848; (3) Revised Allocation: $13,725,848. Changes to the California Highway Pages covering August - October 2025

In the autumn we go to concerts

We hit a rich vein of '80s and '90s acts at the Palace Theater in Albany. In no particular order:

* KT Tunstall & Toad the Wet Sprocket
* ZZ Top
* The Beat(*) & UB40
* Gary Numan and the Psychedelic Furs

KT Tunstall was really damn good. Luckily there was an opening opening act (Vertical Horizon playing a medley of their hit) so despite delays at dinner we did not miss anything important.

Toad the Wet Sprocket was kind of meh.

ZZ Top was a lot of fun. I knew most of the songs. Boy howdy is that music a product of its time though.

The Beat & UB40 - Loads of fun, good energy. I did not know most of the songs and had a blast anyway.

Psychedelic Furs - MASSIVE disappointment. Richard Butler(**) was like somebody's creepy drunk grandpa getting out the dance moves. It was embarrassing to watch. I bought a t-shirt before the show & am having some regrets.

and finally, GO SEE GARY NUMAN IF YOU CAN, OH MY **** ***. I had no idea what to expect. It was loud, it was industrial, the lighting was like something out of Blade Runner. He played "Cars" about 30 minutes in - normally that's the point where we all think, welp, that's the end of the set then - and then he KEPT GOING for another half hour. Absolutely incredible. Super intense, amazing performance. I can't believe he's 67. He still has his voice, his moves, and his precision. GO SEE HIM. Do consider buying the $2 earplugs from his merch booth.

I should have stuck around & bought a Gary Numan t-shirt; but if there is one thing I have learned, it is that if I buy a black crewneck t-shirt I will NEVER wear it.

(*) known in the US as "The English Beat" but they are the One True Beat to me

(**) it still weirds me out that he has the same full name as a friend-of-a-friend who passed away much too young

Life with two kids: one of whom will sleep

It would be awesome if I didn't have to have an argument with Gideon about bedtime every single night.

Sophia doesn't do that any more. I wonder at what age he'll grow out of it.

What I Did in September and early October

Birthday:Moving on to what I did in September and so far in October. First of all was my birthday. I’m now 67.

A Few Things I Did in September: I took two trips which will get their own blog posts. Alas, my needlework group conflicted with one of those trips and with Yom Kippur, so I only made it to one meeting. I saw the movie Guns and Moses (which I already wrote about in my quarterly update on books, movies, and goals) at Tyson’s Corner and browsed an Indian clothing store while I was there.

Dinner With Friends: I went to dinner with friends from Flyertalk at the end of the month. Note to self: the pizza at Fireworks in Clarendon is better than their other menu offerings. The fish sandwich was okay, but fish sandwiches should really come with cole slaw, not potato chips.

High Holidays: I went to High Holiday on-line services at Fabrengen, mostly to save the hassle of dealing with things in the city. I generally try to find some interesting take away every year, particularly for Yom Kippur. This year, my takeaway was this quote from Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel at the August 1969 Liturgical Conference in Milwaukee, which was in a footnote in the machzor (prayer book):

Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and to ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism, falsehoods. The liturgical movement must become a revolutionary movement seeking to overthrow the forces that continue to destroy the promise, the hope, the vision.”

Damn Yankees: I did a bunch of theatre going on one of my trips, but still saw two musicals when I was home. The first of those was Damn Yankees at Arena Stage. I’d talked my friend, Cindy, who was entirely unfamiliar with it, into coming along. While I’d seen the movie version and listened to the original cast recording a gazillion times, I hadn’t seen a live performance of it before. Anyone who knows me at all knows how I feel about a certain pinstriped baseball team (who I was very happy to see lose to Toronto after beating up on my Bosox, but I digress), so it’s no surprise that I love this show. This version was updated, to the early 2000’s and the Source of All Evil in the Universe was playing against Baltimore, not Washington, presumably to make it feasible for the two teams to face each other in the World Series. Anyway, the score has some iconic songs - especially Heart and Whatever Lola Wants, but I think the real highlights of this production were Near to You and A Man Doesn’t Know, both of which I found very moving. I can’t ignore the choreography which was excellent, though I still think the song Who’s Got the Pain? is useless filler. All of the performers were excellent, and I want to particularly note the singing of Quentin Earl Darrington, who plays the aging Joe Boyd, and the dancing of Ana Villafañe as Lola. I should also mention that they had the Orioles mascot come out and lead everyone in Take Me Out to the Ball Game after intermission. But the Orioles don’t actually do that. For some ungodly reason, they sing Thank G-d I’m a Country Boy instead, which is just wrong. Anyway, the show runs through November 9th and you should go see it if you possibly can.

By the way, we had dinner after the show at 54 Noodles Bar, a new Vietnames restaurant near the Waterfront metro station. The spring rolls and pho were both very good and the service was efficient enough. I’m likely to eat there again in the future.

The Turn of the Screw: The other musical I saw locally was The Turn of the Screw at Creative Cauldron, which has moved to a new location, still in Falls Church. I read the novella it’s based on long ago and remembered it being creepy, but unsatisfying, with the key issue being that there is no resolution as to whether there are actual ghosts or the governess is losing her mind (with the children possibly manipulating her). This version added another twist, as it implies that the boy may have been sexually molested by the valet. (I should note that Cindy did not interpret things that way at all.) I was also unimpressed with the acoustics of the new space. On the plus side, the uncle (whose song I’d Rather Not Know was the best of the evening) was played by local favorite Bobby Smith and it is good to see him back on stage after several months recuperating from a terrible car accident.

October So Far: My book club met this past Wednesday night and talked about The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams. I loved this book, as did most of the other people in the book club, though one person couldn’t get through it. I posed a question that I thought would make for good discussion, namely what books you would put on a list that you think everyone should read. Unfortunately, nobody else took the bait. (For what it’s worth, my top choice would be Alice in Wonderland, which is the best book ever written about pretty much everything.)

Story Swap: The monthly Voices in the Glen story swap was held over zoom tonight. I ran through a story I am planning on telling next weekend at the Washington Folk Festival. The highlight of the evening (in my opinion) was Margaret’s recitation of Christina Rosetti’s Goblin Market.

Shameless Self Promotion: The Washington Folk Festival is next Sunday, October 19th at Glen Echo Park. I’ll be on the Storytelling stage from 3:30 to 4 in the afternoon. My blurb is “Spare Change - Join Miriam Nadel for tales of transformation and metamorphosis from around the world and across time.” There’s also plenty of music and dance. It’s always a good time.

Celebrity Death Watch: BeBe Shopp won the 1948 Miss America pageant. Joan Bennett Kennedy was the first wife of senator Ted Kennedy. Mike Greenwell played left field for the Red Sox from 1985-1996. Tommy Price was the drummer for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. John Lodge performed with The Moody Blues and wrote the song I’m Just a Singer in a Rock ad Roll Band. Diane Keaton was an actress whose film roles included Annie Hall. Tony Fitzpatrick was a collage artist. Sandy Alomar Sr. played second base, primarily for the California Angels. He also had two sons who were successful baseball players - Sandy Alomar Jr. and Roberto Alomar. D’Angelo was a neo-soul singer-songwriter.

Mel Taub created the Puns and Anagrams puzzle in The New York Times. This is not quite as complex as a typical cryptic crossword is. But, as a person who loves puns (and, as far as I am concerned, the more atrocious the better), they were always fun to solve.

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt was the chaplain for the basketball team at Loyola University in Chicago. She was the subject of numerous newspaper articles about being a superfan and even became the subject of a bobblehead. She was on my ghoul pool list and earned me 24 points, which includes the 12 point uniqueness bonus. I was, frankly, surprised that nobody else had her on their list, since she was 106 years old.

Surely someone has done the maths on vaccinations.

Today I spent £108 on getting myself vaccinated against Flu and Covid.

Which led me to wonder what the cost of days off is to the economy. And how far off we are from it being worth the government vaccinating everyone.
