I disagree with your claim that modern dancers don't show emotion. This is highly variable and there are numerous styles of modern dance.
What really distinguishes modern dance from classical ballet (and from jazz dance, which is, in general, the biggest influence on musical theatre choreography) is an emphasis on the natural movements of the body, instead of highly artificial movements like the turned out legs of ballet or the stiff jazz hands.
